Ethiopian food in Malawi

Today we had a dinner in a simple Ethiopian Restaurant here in town. Actually the restaurant is located quite closed with our hotel where we stay so it was so convenient for us to eat there. I was really excited for going to this restaurant as I haven’t eaten any Ethiopian food.

It was Håkon (a colleague who had worked a lot in Ethiopia) who lead us to choose the food. He selected Injera (traditional fermented Ethiopian bread baked like pancake) with chicken, egg & sauce called Doro Wot combined with some vegetables.

The lady who has the restaurant and also the one who made the food was really friendly. She is an Ethiopian lady but lives here in Malawi.

About the food: we received a quite big plate with a round Injera that has food on top of it. The chicken, egg and the sauce were in the middle while vegetables, lentils and beans were around. So, we three ate together in the same plate, taking food by hands like the Ethiopians do. The food was really tasty and good. The Doro Wot itself reminds me on almost a similar Indonesian food called rendang (very tasty and spicy Indonesian curry).

After the dinner, the boys took an Ethiopian coffee (hey, do you know that coffee word comes originally from Ethiopia, taken from a town called Kaffa?). The lady served the coffee from a traditional pot. Sugar and milk were served separately. Me? I didn’t take the coffee although I do like the smell of the coffee but for drinking an original coffee with a strong taste oiii hehe.

Hugs from Malawi.
